Meta uses public posts, photos and comments on Facebook to train Meta AI. Paste your own profile link below to see how much of yours is public, then follow the steps to cut it down or object outright.
Meta says it trains its generative AI on public content from adults on Facebook and Instagram: public posts, public photos and their captions, public comments, and your conversations with Meta AI itself. Private messages are not used, and neither is anything shared with Friends or Only me. The lever, then, is the audience of each piece of content. If a post is public, it is in scope. If it is friends-only, it is not.
If you live in the EU, the UK or Switzerland: object
Open Facebook, tap your picture, then Settings and privacy, then Settings.
Open Privacy Center.
Scroll to the section about how Meta uses information for generative AI, or search the Help Center for the right to object to AI training.
Open the objection form, add your email address, and submit it. You can add a reason but you do not have to.
Meta confirms by email and stops using your public content from that point on. Content already used before you objected is not withdrawn.
Everywhere else: make it not public
Tap your picture, Settings and privacy, Settings, then Privacy, then Your activity.
Tap Limit past posts and confirm. Every public post you ever made becomes friends-only in one step.
Set Who can see your future posts to Friends so the default stays that way.
Open your Photos, pick each public album and change its audience. Profile pictures and cover photos stay public by design.
If your country has profile lock, lock your profile. It does all of the above at once.
Comments follow the post they sit under, so a comment on a public Page stays public whatever you do. The only way out of that is to delete the comment.
Meta AI chats and the delete option
Anything you type to Meta AI in Messenger, WhatsApp or the Meta AI app is used too. Inside a chat, the settings menu has an option to delete the information you shared with Meta AI. Use it, and stop tagging Meta AI in group chats where other people's messages get pulled in.
Common questions
Can I opt out of Meta AI training in the United States?
There is no objection form outside the EU, the UK and a few other places. What you can do is make your content non-public with Limit past posts and audience settings, since Meta only trains on public content.
Does Meta use my private messages to train AI?
No. Meta says messages with friends and family are not used, except for what you send to Meta AI itself inside a chat.
Does the objection also cover Instagram?
The form covers the Meta account it is filed for. If your Facebook and Instagram are in the same Accounts Center, one objection applies to both; otherwise file one from each.
Will the objection remove my data from models already trained?
No. Meta stops using your content going forward. Anything used before the objection stays in the models that were already built.
