Facebook has no single private switch. A profile is a set of sections, each with its own audience, so a private profile usually means a person who set most of them to Friends. Even then, a few things stay visible to everyone: the name, the current profile picture, the current cover photo, and whatever public posts, tagged photos and liked Pages they never revisited.

Private profile versus locked profile
Profile lock is the strong version, available in India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Egypt, Vietnam and a growing list of countries. It hides the full-size profile picture, moves every older public post to friends-only, limits the About page and turns on tag review in one step. A locked profile shows a non-friend almost nothing, and there is no way around it that does not involve being added as a friend.
A private profile outside those countries is put together by hand, and hands miss things. That is where the tagged photos, the public comments and the check-ins made by friends come in.
What does a locked profile still show someone who is not a friend? Less than a private profile, but still a few things. Press the button above, then check each one:
Name, small profile picture and cover strip. These always show, right on the profile.
Mutual friends. Facebook always shows the friends you have in common, and no setting hides them. Open Friends under People.
Photos friends posted of them in public. The lock does not change other people's posts, so a friend's public photo stays public. Open Photos under Tags.
Comments they left on public posts, Pages and groups. Everyone who can see the post can read them. Open the links under Comments.
Check-ins a friend shared in public and tagged them in. Open All under Places.
Most locked profiles still turn up something in one or two of these. What stays empty is friends-only, and only a friend request changes that.

Sites that promise to unlock a private profile want a login or a payment. They have nothing behind the button.

Can this open a private or locked Facebook profile?
No, and no tool can. Anything set to Only me or Friends stays hidden. What this does is gather the parts of a locked profile that are still public, which is usually more than people expect.
Why do I still see a profile picture on a locked account?
Because Facebook keeps profile and cover photos public by default, even in Locked Profile mode. The person has to change that separately.
Someone else tagged them. Can I see that?
Sometimes. A tagged photo follows the privacy of whoever posted it, not the person tagged. If their friend posted it publicly, it stays public.
Can I see a private profile's photos through tagged photos?
Sometimes. Photos other people uploaded and tagged them in follow the uploader's audience, and a friend's public album shows them regardless of their own settings.
Is there a way to see a locked profile?

How to check a locked Facebook profile, step by step
This order turns up the most in the least time. You need to be logged in to Facebook for steps 2 to 4.
Open the profile and look under the name. A lock icon and a line saying the person locked their profile mean profile lock. No lock icon means a private profile set up by hand, which usually leaves more open.
Tap the mutual friends line. Facebook shows the friends you have in common even when the rest of the friends list is hidden. A mutual friend is often the fastest route to everything else.
Search their full name on Facebook and pick the Posts filter. Public posts that name them can turn up there, including posts in public groups. The lock does not change those.
Open the public photos of a mutual friend or a relative. A photo of the person that someone else posted in public follows the audience of whoever posted it, not the lock.
Open the profile in a private window, logged out. That is what anyone sees without an account.
If all five come up empty, the person has closed every door Facebook offers. Only a friend request gets you further.
Three example profiles and what turned up
These profiles are made up, but each one is typical of what people find when they run the steps above.
A locked profile in Manila. The lock icon, a small round picture, the cover as a strip and 3 mutual friends. Her name under Posts turns up a public post in a neighbourhood buy and sell group from last month. A cousin's public album from a 2023 birthday has her tagged. Nothing else opens.
A private profile in Texas, no lock. The timeline shows two public posts from 2017, from before he changed his default audience. Changing it later did not touch them. His Profile Pictures album still holds six older pictures set to Public, with likes from family. The friends list is hidden, but 2 mutual friends show.
A profile that will not load. The link shows a message that the content is not available. That is not a lock, because a locked profile always shows the name and the lock icon. It points to a block, a deactivated account or a changed username.
A fake account. It breaks Facebook's rules, Meta removes fake accounts by the millions, and a new profile with no friends and no photos is the request most people decline.
An unlock app or site. A service that asks for your Facebook login to show a private profile is after the login. It cannot see more than your own account can.
What works is slower and plain: the five steps above, and a friend request if you know the person.
When the locked profile is yours
Many people land here from the other side. They locked their own profile and now wonder who stalks my Facebook anyway. A lock does not change what Facebook tells you: profile visits stay invisible, locked or not, and nobody gets a visitor log.
What the lock does change is what a stranger can reach. Posts and photos on your timeline, your stories and the full-size profile picture and cover photo go to friends only. The one place names appear is your story viewer list, and with the lock on, only friends can be on it.
What a locked Facebook profile is
Profile Lock is one switch that does the work of six privacy settings at once. Facebook started it in India in 2020 and has since added it in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey and a few other countries. There is no lock button in the United States, Canada, the UK or the European Union.
The lock follows the owner, not the visitor. Someone in Texas can open the profile of a cousin in Dhaka and see it locked, even though they could never lock their own.
You can spot a locked profile in a second. There is a small lock badge under the name and a line saying the person locked their profile. Tapping the profile picture or the cover does nothing. The timeline is empty, or shows only a few lines from the intro.

When the account was made. The Facebook account creation date checker estimates it from the profile ID. That matters on a locked profile, because a lock also hides how new an account is.

A locked profile you do not know
Many people look for a locked profile viewer after a friend request from a stranger. The lock hides the timeline, so it also hides whether there is a real person behind it. Fake and scam accounts lock their profiles for exactly that reason.
You can still check a few things before you answer:
The profile ID. Paste the link into the account creation date checker. An ID that starts with 61 means an account from the last few years. A real person who joined long ago has a much shorter number.
Mutual friends. Zero mutual friends with someone who claims to know you is a warning sign. Several mutual friends you trust is a good one.
The picture. A model photo or a stock image is common on fake accounts. Take a screenshot of the small picture, search it on Google Lens, and see where else it shows up.
The name and the story. A name that does not match the picture, or a message that turns to money or crypto fast, says more than any profile.
If the checks look wrong, ignore the request. Facebook does not tell anyone when you delete a friend request.
If they look fine, accepting the request is the only way to see the rest. You can remove the friend later if the timeline is not what you expected.
