A Facebook profile keeps photos in four places, and the timeline only shows one of them. Photos the person uploaded sit in their albums. Photos other people uploaded and tagged them in live on those people's profiles, and only appear under Photos of you if the tag was approved. Photos they liked and photos they commented on are not on their profile at all.
