What anonymous means on Facebook

Facebook does not tell anyone who looked at their profile. That has been true since the site launched, it is stated in Facebook's own help pages, and it applies to the timeline, the photos, the friends list, the About page and the videos. Nobody gets a visitor log, no app can produce one, and the people who claim to be able to are guessing from your friend list.

So looking at a profile is already anonymous, whether you use StalkFace or type the name into Facebook's search box. What StalkFace adds is a direct route: paste the link, press the button, and open the photos, the friends, the groups or the check-ins in one click instead of scrolling the timeline hunting for them.

The one exception

Stories. When you open someone's story, your name goes on the viewer list they can see. That also covers highlights on the profile and Reels shared to a story. Everything else on this page opens without a trace. If you want the story too, the story viewer page explains what is and is not possible.

What StalkFace does and does not keep

• The links are built in your browser. No profile you paste is sent anywhere else or stored.
• There is no account and no history, so there is nothing to clear afterwards.
• You open the links in your own Facebook session, which is why the audience rules still apply.

Can you view Facebook without an account?

Yes, but only the public front of a profile. Open a profile link in a browser where you are not logged in, and Facebook shows the name, the profile picture, the cover photo, the public intro and a few public posts. Scroll a little further and a login box covers the page. That is the whole logged-out view.

What works without logging in:

• A profile link pasted into the address bar: the name, the pictures, the public intro and a few public posts.
• Facebook Pages of businesses, creators and public figures. They show far more of their posts.
• A direct link to a public post, photo, video or Reel that someone sent you.
• A Google search for the name plus the word Facebook. It finds public profiles without Facebook's own search box.

What needs an account: Facebook's search box, friends lists, groups, tagged photos, check-ins and stories. The links StalkFace builds open inside Facebook, so they need your usual session too. That session stays private: Facebook does not tell anyone which profiles you open.

To search Facebook by keyword instead, the Facebook post search page builds the search links for you, including a Google search that needs no account.

Search Facebook by name without an account

Facebook's own search box asks you to log in. Google does not. It keeps public Facebook profiles and Pages in its index, and adding site:facebook.com keeps the results on Facebook.

Type the name, and add a city, a workplace or a school if you know one. Each detail gets a search of its own.

Start with the name alone, then add one detail at a time. A common name almost always needs a city or a school. Open a result in a private window and you see the profile the way anyone without an account does.

Some people never show up on Google. Facebook lets each person decide whether search engines outside Facebook can link to their profile, and many say no. Facebook's own search still finds them once you are logged in, and nobody is told who searched for them.

Anonymous works both ways

When you open someone's profile, Facebook does not tell them. When someone opens yours, Facebook does not tell you either. That second half is why every Facebook stalker viewer that promises a list of your visitors comes up empty: the list does not exist, so no app can read it.

If what you really want to know is who keeps looking at you, the useful answers are your story viewer list and the people who react to what you post. We go through both, with what each one can and cannot show.

Logged out or logged in: what each one shows

The same profile looks different depending on whether you are logged in. Here is what usually shows on a personal profile, before Facebook covers the page with a login box:

• Name, profile picture and cover photo. Logged out: yes. Logged in: yes, and you can open them at full size unless the profile is locked.
• Intro details set to Public, such as a city, a school or a job. Logged out: yes. Logged in: yes.
• Posts set to Public. Logged out: the first few, then the login box. Logged in: all of them.
• Photos and videos. Logged out: a few thumbnails at most. Logged in: every album and video that is public or shared with you.
• Friends, groups, check-ins and tagged photos. Logged out: no. Logged in: whatever the person shares with you.
• Stories and highlights. Logged out: no. Logged in: yes, but your name goes on the viewer list.

So logging out hides you from nobody, because profile visits are never reported anyway. It only shows you less. The one thing worth doing logged out is checking what a stranger sees.

If the profile has a lock badge under the name, it shows even less to anyone who is not a friend. The Facebook private profile viewer lists what a lock still leaves out.

Facebook profile link formats, and which ones to paste

The box at the top takes a profile link, a username or an ID. Links come in a few shapes:

• facebook.com/maria.lopez.79: the usual link, with the username the person chose. Paste it as it is.
• m.facebook.com/maria.lopez.79: the same link from the mobile site. Paste it as it is.
• facebook.com/profile.php?id=100012345678901: a profile without a username. The number is the profile ID. Paste it as it is.
• fb.com/maria.lopez.79: the short domain. Paste just the username, maria.lopez.79.
• facebook.com/share/1AbCdEfGh/: a share link from the app. Open it once in your browser, then copy the address it lands on.
• facebook.com/people/Maria-Lopez/100012345678901/: an older style of public profile link. Paste just the number at the end.

A username can change. The ID never does, so it is the safer thing to keep if you want to find the profile again later. The Facebook ID finder reads the ID out of any of these links.

How to view a profile anonymously on your phone

Most people open StalkFace on a phone. These steps work in Chrome on Android and in Safari on an iPhone:

1. In the Facebook app, open the profile, tap the three dots next to the Message or Add friend button, and choose Copy link.
2. Open this page in your browser, paste the link in the box at the top and press the button.
3. Tap a result. If it jumps into the Facebook app, go back, long press the result and choose to open it in a new tab, so it stays in the browser.
4. To see the profile the way someone without an account does, long press the Profile link and open it in a private or incognito tab.

None of this tells the person anything. The browser route simply keeps every result in its own tab, so you can switch between photos, friends and posts without losing your place.

Does Facebook tell them you looked? Still no in 2026

You may have seen videos saying Facebook now shows stalkers. Here is what that means for the person looking. When you open a profile, the owner gets no notification, no name and no count they can trace to you. That has not changed.

• You do not land in their People You May Know because you looked. That row is built from mutual friends, shared groups, contacts and photo tags, and Facebook's own list of its signals leaves profile visits out. If you already share a friend, you may appear there anyway, as you would have before.
• If their profile is in professional mode, your visit adds one to a 28-day Profile visits number. The number has no names.
• The see who viewed your profile message that went around in March 2026 is a scam that steals accounts. It cannot show you to anyone.

What does give you away is the same short list as always: watching a story, reacting, commenting, sharing, following, sending a friend request, and the Seen mark in Messenger. Everything else on this page opens quietly.
