Every Facebook profile has a numeric ID, a number of up to sixteen digits that Facebook assigned when the account was created. Mark Zuckerberg's is 4. Most profiles also have a username, the word after facebook.com/ in the address bar, which the person picked and can change. Links come in two shapes because of that: facebook.com/username, or facebook.com/profile.php?id= followed by the number.

How to find or copy a Facebook profile link
The finder above needs a profile link, and getting one is quicker than it looks. Pick the route that matches where you are:
On a computer: open the profile and copy the address from the browser bar. That is the link.
In the Facebook app: open the profile, tap the three dots next to the Message or Add friend button, and choose Copy link.
From a post, a comment or a group: tap the person's name to open their profile, then copy the link as above.
From Messenger: tap the name at the top of the chat, open their Facebook profile, and copy the link from there.
From a name only: search the name on Facebook, or on Google with the word Facebook and a city or school, open the profile that matches, and copy its link.
If the app hands you a link with /share/ in it, open it in a browser once and copy the address it lands on. The share link hides the username; the address it opens does not.

How to find the numeric ID behind a username
Open the profile on a desktop browser and wait for it to load.
Press Ctrl+U on Windows or Cmd+Option+U on a Mac to view the page source.
Press Ctrl+F and search for userID with a capital ID. The number in quotes right after it is the profile's ID.
Paste that number above to get the profile.php?id= link, which keeps working even if the username changes later.
For a Page, there is an easier route: open the Page, click About, then Page transparency. Facebook prints the Page ID there. For a group, the number in the address bar is the group ID once you open any post in it.
What a Facebook ID is good for
Opening a profile that changed its username. The number never changes.
Reporting or blocking a profile when the name is in another alphabet.
Linking to a profile from a site or a spreadsheet without depending on the vanity name.

What a Facebook ID says about the age of an account
A rough idea, and nothing more. Facebook hands out profile IDs in rising order, so a smaller number usually means an older account. It gives you an era, not a date:
Short IDs, up to about ten digits: the early years, before 2010. Mark Zuckerberg is 4.
Fifteen digits starting with 1000: accounts from about 2009 onward. Within that range, a smaller number is usually older.
Numbers starting with 61: accounts made in the last few years.
Three things to keep in mind. The ID dates the account, not the person behind it, so an old account can carry a new name and new photos. Pages and business accounts use their own number ranges. And Facebook never shows the day a profile was made. The closest it gets is the year the person joined, which appears on their Marketplace profile. Any site that gives you an exact day is guessing.
For a closer answer, open their Photos and scroll to the oldest picture they left public. The account is at least as old as that picture.
Common questions
Is a Facebook ID the same as a username?
No. The username is the word in the link, chosen by the person and changeable. The ID is a number Facebook assigned once, and it stays the same for the life of the account.
Can I find someone's Facebook ID from their name?
Not from the name alone. Search the name on Facebook, open the right profile, and paste that link here. Names repeat; IDs do not.

Why does the page source method sometimes show several IDs?

Can I search Facebook by phone number?
Not in the search bar; Facebook removed that in 2018. Save the number in your contacts and let the Facebook or Messenger app check your contacts. The person appears only if their settings allow being found by phone number.
Why does a profile link show profile.php?id= instead of a username?
Because the account has no username. Facebook stopped asking new users to pick one, so many newer profiles only have the number. The number works as a permanent link, and the box at the top accepts it.
Where do I find or change my own Facebook username?
Open Settings and privacy, then Settings, then Accounts Center, then Profiles. Pick your Facebook profile and tap Username. The same screen lets you change it, and Facebook limits how often you can.
Is a Facebook username finder app safe?
Apps and sites that promise a username from a name or a phone number have no access Facebook does not give everyone. They either run the same People search you can run yourself or ask you to log in, which hands over your account. StalkFace reads the link you paste in your own browser and sends nothing.
Opening a profile when you only have the ID
A Facebook ID viewer works in both directions. The finder above reads the ID out of a link. If you already have a number, these addresses open what it belongs to:
facebook.com/profile.php?id=100012345678901 opens a personal profile. Put the number after id=.
facebook.com/100012345678901, with the number right after the slash, opens most profiles and Pages too.
facebook.com/groups/123456789012345 opens a group.
The bare number pasted in the box at the top gives you the photos, friends and posts links for that profile in one go.
If the number opens nothing, the account was deleted or deactivated, it blocked you, or the number is not a profile ID at all. Apps and games that use Facebook login get a different number for each person, and those numbers do not open a profile on facebook.com.
Looking someone up by ID tells them nothing, the same as any other visit. The Facebook anonymous viewer explains what does.
Facebook username finder: from a profile link
The username is the part after facebook.com/ in a profile link, chosen by the person and changeable. The box at the top reads it out of whatever you paste. The link shapes it handles:
facebook.com/username and m.facebook.com/username: the username is right there.
facebook.com/profile.php?id=100012345678901: no username, only the ID. Open the link once; if the account has a username, the address bar switches to it when the page loads.
facebook.com/share/ links from the app: the share address hides the handle. Open it in a browser and copy the address it lands on, then paste that.
facebook.com/people/Maria-Lopez/100012345678901/: the name in the middle is the display name, not a username. The number at the end is the ID.
Usernames are not for ever: a person can drop one and someone else can pick it up later. The ID is the handle that stays, which is why the page builds both links.
Find a Facebook username by name
Facebook has no search box for usernames, and a name alone does not give you one. The route is to find the profile first and read the username from its address:
Search the name on Facebook and open the People tab. Narrow it with a city, school or workplace if the name is common.
Open the profile that matches the photo and the details you know.
On a computer, the address bar shows facebook.com/ and the username. In the app, tap the three dots on the profile and choose Copy link, then paste the link here.
If you are not logged in, a Google search for the name with the word facebook finds public profiles too. The anonymous Facebook viewer page builds that search for a name, with a city or school added, in one tap.
Find a Facebook username from the numeric ID
Paste the number in the box at the top, or open facebook.com/profile.php?id= followed by it. When the profile loads, look at the address bar:
It changed to facebook.com/ and a word: that word is the username.
It still shows profile.php?id=: the account has no username. That is common for accounts made in the last few years, because Facebook no longer asks new users to pick one.
Nothing loads: the number is not a profile ID, the account is gone, or it blocked you. The page on a blocked or deactivated account sorts those apart.
Find a Facebook profile by phone number
Facebook removed phone number and email search from the search bar in April 2018. Typing a number into Facebook search today finds nothing. What still works runs through your own contacts:
Save the number in your phone's contacts, then let the Facebook or Messenger app check your contacts: Friends, then Contacts in Facebook; People, then Contacts in Messenger. If the person allows being found by phone number, their profile shows up as a suggestion.
That setting is theirs, not yours: Who can look you up using the phone number you provided, under Settings and Privacy. If they set it to Friends, or never added the number, nothing appears.
Sites that promise a phone number lookup either return nothing or sell copies of a 2019 data leak, which is years out of date and illegal to use in most places.
Once a suggestion appears, open the profile and paste its link here to get the username and ID like any other.
