A Facebook story is a photo, a short video or a few lines of text that sits at the top of the feed for 24 hours. You open one by tapping the ring around someone's profile picture, or the card in the story bar. When people look for a story viewer, they usually mean one of these three:
24-hour stories and highlights both keep a list of who watched. The person who posted them can open that list at any time.
Highlights are stories a person pinned to their profile so they stay after the 24 hours. They show near the top of the profile as a row of covers, each with a name. Tap one and it plays like a story, clip after clip.
Who can open them depends on the audience the person set for each highlight: Public, Friends or a custom list. A Public highlight opens for anyone logged in to Facebook. A Friends highlight does not show up at all for someone outside the list. Opening a highlight works like opening any story, so count on the person being able to see it.
So start with the public photos and videos: paste the profile link above and open them first. Open the highlight itself only if you are fine with your name on the list.
You can watch the story of someone who is not your friend only if they shared it as Public, and only while you are logged in to Facebook. Public stories appear when you open their profile. Page stories are public by nature, so anyone can watch those.
A story shared with Friends or a custom list never appears for anyone outside that list, however you open the profile. And a public story still counts your view: you can show up by name, or inside the count of other viewers.
Nothing. A logged-out visitor gets the public shell of a profile: the name, the profile picture, the cover photo, the bio line and a handful of public posts. The story tray and the highlights need a Facebook session, so there is no logged-out route to a story at all.
That is also the answer to how the anonymous story viewer sites work. They log in with accounts of their own, fetch the story, and show it to you. The person who posted it still sees a viewer, it is just the site's account instead of yours. Meta has been blocking those accounts and, in some cases, the sites themselves. StalkFace runs no accounts and fetches nothing. It builds links you open yourself, in your own browser.
Whoever posts a story can open a list of everyone who watched it. Friends and non-friends both appear, each name once, with no count of how many times you replayed it. Muting the person, unfollowing them or watching from the story bar instead of their profile changes nothing.
The airplane-mode trick has the same problem. The app records the view and sends it as soon as you are back online. Watching from a second account only swaps your name for that account's name, and Facebook increasingly links the two.
Only the person who posted it. Nobody else can open the viewer list, and your own friends get no notice of what you watched. Here is what that person sees:
If you are not their friend, you only see a story they shared as Public. A story set to Friends or to a custom list does not show up for you on Facebook at all. StalkFace follows the same rule: it builds links you open yourself, and a person who is not a friend only sees what the owner made public.
Everything except stories. Facebook does not report who looked at a profile, who scrolled a photo album or who watched a public video. No. This is the one place Facebook is different: whoever posts a story sees a list of everyone who watched it, and opening it while logged in puts you on that list. Nothing on this page changes that, and any site claiming otherwise is not telling you the truth.

It marks someone who viewed the story since the list was last opened. Facebook's Help Center does not explain it, and it does not mean the person watched more than once.
Friends come first, then Messenger contacts when the story is open to them, then followers and other people on a public story. Facebook does not say how it sorts names inside each group, so a name near the top does not mean that person looks at your profile more.
They can see how many times their story was rewatched. So if you replay a story from someone who pays for Facebook Plus, the replay can show up in that count.

A person who is not a friend can only watch a story whose audience lets them in. The poster picks that audience when they share it:
So a stranger on your own list means the story was Public, or open to your Messenger contacts. To keep the next one among friends, pick Friends in the story's privacy setting before you share it.
Facebook Plus is Meta's paid add-on for the Facebook app, $3.99 a month in the US. It came out in May 2026 and has been part of the Meta One subscription bundle since 15 September 2026. For the person who pays, stories change in three ways:
Your side does not change. Watching a story still puts you on the list, and a story from someone with Plus can still be up on its second day. If you replay it, the replay can add to their rewatch count.
